This is the time of year when people start looking toward the summer and planning for fun—including hot tub installation. Raceway Electric, LLC is the hot tub wiring electrician in Wichita that you need.
As with any electrical wiring, it’s important to get it right. Improperly wired hot tubs can cause nuisance tripping of the breaker and worse, fires. Electrical codes vary by city and county so it’s vital to have a qualified, licensed electrician perform your hot tub wiring. There are two types of hot tub installations, “plug and play” and hard-wired. Plug-and-play hot tubs are usually 110V/15AMPs which can be directly plugged into a standard ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlet. Hard-wired hot tubs are more common and are 220V/50AMPS and provide more heat and heat up and cool down faster than the “plug and play” models.
Water and electricity don’t mix and it’s certainly a combination you don’t want to get wrong. Improperly installed hot tub wiring can create a real danger to you and your family. Hot tub wiring should be properly grounded. A ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) is a device that can detect when a circuit is shorting out. The GFCI will trip a circuit and prevent it from sending imbalanced electricity to your hot tub equipment—which will damage it—or keep electricity from going into the water—which can be deadly.
Hard-wired hot tubs should have their own circuit that isn’t shared with any other appliances or tools, otherwise, nuisance tripping is likely to occur. Other problems that can occur with a poorly executed hot tub installation include using the wrong wire gauges or improper electrical connection. These issues can lead to circuit breaker tripping, damaged equipment, damaged electrical box, fuse damage, and could even end up voiding your hot tub warranty.
